It doesn’t matter what topic you have; chances are that there are hundreds of books or thousands on the same subject. If you do it right, reading these books can provide a valuable resource for your readers. It is not a good idea to purchase all the books you wish to review, especially if only one book will be reviewed weekly. While the library is a great option, they may not have all the new books you are looking for.
This is one-way publishers can spread the word about a new book. Each book is printed in large quantities for review copies. This means they are free for you to read Book recommendations. In return, you will introduce the book’s author to your target audience. I was still happy for publishers to send me to review copies. Publishers can access a small number of people for the price of shipping and handling.
After you’ve chosen a book to review, it is easy to search Amazon for the publisher’s information. You can scroll down from the book’s page to find the product details from Darren’s book Problogger. Take note of the Publisher as well as the ISBN-10 number. Google the Publisher to locate their site. You will find a section on the Publisher’s website, often under the FAQ or contact section. This section will contain information about contacting them for review copy requests.
Publishers will be specific about how they wish to be contacted. You shouldn’t try and trick them. They will likely respond if you use the method they have asked for. They will sometimes list an email address or a phone number, but fax is the most commonly used contact method. You will be asked to fax the “company letterhead” before sending a review copy.
Have no fear. This request is easy. Type in your website’s address and name in a header or footer. Right, a brief letter with the following: The book name, ISBN-10 code, your website information, and possibly why your readers would love the book. Send it by fax, and you will be set. The Publisher will usually contact you within a few business days if they are interested.
It goes without saying that once you receive the copy requested, you must write the reviews. A good review is essential if you want to keep writing checks. Not a positive review. I wrote a positive review. Giving positive book reviews is not a good idea simply because you were issued a free copy. Publishers will accept a fair, professional, and honest review. It’s worth sending the Publisher an email after you click publish. You might get an offer from the Publisher to read other books if they have received a thorough review.
You can keep track of which publishers you have contacted so that you can create a spreadsheet. If you haven’t received review copies from any publishers in the past, it might not be worth your time to request newer books. Most likely, you’ll establish a relationship with a few publishers. Eventually, they will contact you, asking if you would like to review a new title.
